Senior dental examinations in Cookstown

Your priorities guide the conversation.

Whether you have natural teeth, dental implants, or dentures, a dental examination is a chance to review how your mouth feels and functions. Tell us about chewing difficulties, sore areas, or changes you have noticed.

At Cookstown Dental Centre, we discuss your health, existing dental work, and the practical side of daily care. The next step should reflect your needs and preferences, with clear explanations before treatment decisions.

A complete view of your mouth

More than checking your teeth.

Your examination is tailored to your history and concerns. These are some of the areas we may review.

Teeth and existing dental work

A review of remaining teeth, fillings, crowns, and other restorations for changes that may need attention.

Gums and supporting tissues

An assessment of gum health, including areas of bleeding, recession, or discomfort.

Dry mouth and medications

Some medicines can reduce saliva. Discussing dryness and your medication list helps us understand changes affecting your mouth.

Dentures and chewing comfort

A conversation about fit, sore spots, and how comfortably you can eat with your current dental work.

Soft tissues

A check of the tongue, cheeks, and other tissues for unusual changes or areas needing further investigation.

A manageable home routine

Practical discussion of brushing, cleaning between teeth, and any assistance that would make daily care easier.

A change worth mentioning

Dry mouth is not simply part of getting older.

Persistent dryness can affect speaking, eating, and comfort, and can increase the risk of tooth decay. Medicines and health conditions can contribute. Tell your dentist or doctor if your mouth often feels dry.

Bring an up-to-date medication list. Do not stop or change prescribed medicines on your own; any changes should be discussed with the prescribing clinician.

Make the most of your visit

Bring your questions. We’ll take it from there.

Let us know when booking if you would like to discuss mobility, communication, or support-person arrangements. We can confirm the details before your appointment.

  • Your insurance information and any questions about treatment costs.

If someone helps you manage appointments, tell us how you would like them involved in the conversation.

Frequently asked questions

Planning a senior dental examination.

Do I need an examination if I have full dentures?

Yes. Dental visits can assess denture fit and the health of your gums and other mouth tissues, even when you no longer have natural teeth.

Will I need X-rays at every visit?

Not necessarily. Your dentist considers your history, symptoms, examination findings, and previous images before recommending X-rays.

Can a family member come with me?

Let us know when booking. We can discuss their role, any space or access needs, and your preferences about sharing information.

Is treatment always done at the examination?

The examination helps identify and discuss your needs. Further care may require a separate appointment. We will explain the proposed plan and fees before treatment.
